~Glass is everywhere in our home and work. It is critical to our daily lives
and we think of it as commonplace.
To make a fused piece, requires that glass be selected, individually cut, pieced, glued and fired. Some pieces require multiple firings in a kiln.
Fused glass requires the use of art glass that is fuseable and compatible. To fuse glass, it must be fired slowly at high temperatures reaching 1500+ degrees and cooled slowly. If not correctly fired, a glass piece can actually lose intensity if fired too high or crack if not properly cooled. The glass artist must use specific glass that has the same rate of expansion and contraction. Glass can be opaque, transparent and iridized. The use of dichroic glass in fused jewelry pieces allows the artist to create eye catching patterns, designs and reflected colors. This type of glass has a vivid range of color and a captivating intensity.
